Dress Code

The District's dress code is established to teach grooming and hygiene, prevent disruption, and minimize safety hazards. Students and parents may determine a student's personal dress and grooming standards, provided that they comply with the following guidelines:

The following will be considered inappropriate attire and in violation of the District Dress Code:

  • Clothing which is extremely revealing of the physical body and extremely tight fitting. This includes, but is not limited to tank tops (with less than 3-fingers width), spaghetti strapped tops, extremely tight Capri pants - shorts - or jeans, half-tops of any kind, all low-cut tops and halter tops which reveal the midriff or stomach, items considered to be undergarments, see- through or transparent apparel, shorts- skirts- or skorts shorter than three inches above the top of the knee cap—when standing and five inches above the top of the knee cap—when seated (this is measured by a 3 X 5 card), plain white t-shirts without pockets, sweats (unless athletic department issue), cut-off jeans, spandex shorts and spandex pants.
  • Clothing which displays offensive writing, slogans, gestures, or drawings - this includes, but is not limited to suggestive writing, pornography, references to sexual content/activities, moral questions, advertising of alcoholic beverages or references to other controlled substances, and any gang-related symbols.
  • Pajamas are not allowed unless it is a school-wide event such as Red Ribbon Week or Homecoming Week.
  • The wearing or caps, hats, toboggans, and other headgear, and/or sunglasses (unless specifically prescribed by a doctor with a note on file) in school, or during any school-related activities. Caps and hats may be worn at athletic events in the high school gym, Delaware Gym, or Eagle Fields. These caps/hats must be worn facing forward.
  • Failure to wear shoes. House shoes and some flat flip flops, thongs, or slides may be considered inappropriate or unsafe. No stilettos are allowed.
  • Young men’s hair if it falls below the lobe of the ear on the sides or below the bottom of a standard collar in the back, or hair that falls below the eyebrows regardless of how it may be combed. Haircuts that reflect particular emblems, symbols, or designs. Ponytails on young men are not acceptable.
  • Any unnatural hair coloring including any other colors that are not blonde, brown, auburn, or black. Green, red, or other unnatural hair coloring streaks or highlights are not allowed.
  • Facial hair including mustaches, beards, goatees, and sideburns that extends below the ear lobe or beard streaks along the cheeks. Students in violation of this will be asked to shave in the office and pay for the disposable razor that they use.
  • Baggy (sagging) pants are prohibited. Pants must be worn secured and secured by a belt at the waist. The waist will be defined as the area of the body within 1 inch above or below the belly button. Undergarments must not be visible.
  • NO Earrings worn on young men. Covering earrings with tape or band-aids is unacceptable.
  • Work clothes, and pocket chains are prohibited.
  • Long or colored fingernails on young men. Black lipstick is inappropriate on any student.
  • All shirts must be tucked in for Junior High and High School (6-12 professional consideration).
  • No body-piercing of any type (excluding females with earrings on the lobe area only). Covering with tape is unacceptable, no plastic filament in the place of piercing. Body-piercing is prohibited such as nose, lib, eyebrow, tongue, navel, and parts of the upper ear. Only two sets of earrings can be worn on the lobe area if the earrings are normal size.
  • No tattoos or tattoo simulations. School spirit temporary tattoos are permitted on game days.
  • Camouflage/military clothing of any kind. This includes, but is not limited to, army boots.
  • Any dress or grooming practice which might be considered unsafe, potentially dangerous and/or distracting to individuals or other students, or impedes the overall educational process in any way.
  • No Athletic School Wear Equipment should be worn, unless leaving on an athletic trip.

The administration reserves the right to extend the dress code (even if clothes are the student’s size) to include attire not listed specifically above, but which is deemed to be inappropriate. It is imperative and vital to maintain an environment which provides for the safety and academic success of all our students.

If the principal determines that a student’s grooming/dress violates the dress code or the code of conduct, the student shall be given the opportunity to correct the problem by changing into appropriate attire at school. If not corrected, the student shall be assigned to ISS for the remainder of the day on the first offense; repeated offenses 3 days in ISS.
